Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede has labeled the upcoming U.S. delegation visit a “clear provocation.” Second Lady Usha Vance will lead this group, which includes National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright. The visit comes as President Donald Trump continues to discuss bringing Greenland under American control.
About 1,000 Greenlanders have marched from Nuuk’s center to the U.S. consulate. They protest Trump’s recent statements questioning their country’s sovereignty.
White House National Security Council Spokesperson Brian Hughes claims the visit aims to “learn about Greenland, its culture, history, and people.” He says it offers a chance to “build partnerships that respect Greenland’s self-determination.”
Egede disagrees strongly. “This is not a harmless visit from a politician’s wife,” he told Greenlandic news outlet Sermitsiaq. “Why is the national security advisor coming to Greenland?”
The prime minister believes the visit only serves to “demonstrate power” with a message that “cannot be misunderstood.” He worries Waltz’s presence will “make Americans believe in Trump’s mission” to annex their semi-autonomous territory.
Egede criticizes the weak international response to Trump’s threats. “Our allies hide in a small corner, whispering support that has no effect,” he stated. He warns that without vocal backing, U.S. “aggression” will grow. “The new American leadership shows complete indifference to our previous agreements.”
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen connects the visit directly to “recent U.S. statements about Greenland.” She stressed that Denmark wants cooperation with America, but based on “sovereignty and respect between countries and peoples.”
