Swindon’s Link Centre Marks 40 Years of Serving the Community

SWINDON, April 2025 – One of Wiltshire’s largest leisure facilities, the Link Centre in Swindon, is celebrating 40 years of service to the community with a special event showcasing its enduring role as a fitness and recreation hub.

Opened in 1985, the centre features a gym, swimming pool, and a national-sized ice rink — home to Swindon Wildcats of the National Ice Hockey League. Over the decades, it has become a cornerstone for fitness enthusiasts, families, and professional athletes alike.

A celebration took place on April 26, offering discounted access to activities like ice skating, swimming, and trampolining, along with community stalls and displays.

Clive Seabrook, the centre’s general manager, called the facility “the hub of west Swindon”, highlighting its value to generations of residents. “It’s a really important building for the community,” he said.

A Legacy of Activity and Connection

In its first year, the Link Centre drew an estimated one million visitors. Gym-goer Alfie Druett, 18, who trains there five days a week, said, “It’s always been a big part of my life and my family’s life. Everyone gets on and works toward their own goals.”

The facility is managed by Greenwich Leisure Limited under the Better brand and owned by Swindon Borough Council. Coach Aaron Nell of the Swindon Wildcats praised the centre’s upkeep, saying, “After 40 years, many rinks wear out. This one hasn’t. The view from the stands is still as good as it gets.”

From Flooding to Full Recovery

The centre faced challenges recently, including a temporary closure in September 2023 due to heavy flooding. After undergoing extensive renovations, including new ceilings, tiling, lighting, and redecoration, it reopened in January 2024, much to the delight of the community.

The Link Centre’s 40-year journey stands as a testament to its resilience, adaptability, and impact — offering a place for health, connection, and celebration for residents of all ages.
